Dr. Richard Liebowitz Named President of NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - December 20, 2016) - Dr. Richard Liebowitz has been appointed president of NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, effective February 6. Currently NewYork-Presbyterian's chief medical officer, Dr. Liebowitz succeeds Mark Mundy, who announced his retirement earlier this year after more than two decades of leadership.

As president of NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist, Dr. Liebowitz will be responsible for leadership and oversight of the tertiary care facility, located in Brooklyn's Park Slope.

"Dr. Liebowitz is an outstanding physician leader who has helped expand NewYork-Presbyterian's state-of-the-art care across the New York metro region," said Dr. Steven J. Corwin, president and CEO of NewYork-Presbyterian. "As president of NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist, he will continue this work for patients and families in the area, leading a highly talented team of physicians and staff dedicated to enhancing care."

"It's an honor to lead a hospital with such a long standing track record of providing quality care and service to its community," said Dr. Liebowitz. "I look forward to working with the NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist team to ensure that its patients have access to world-class care, right in their backyard."

Since joining NewYork-Presbyterian in 2006, Dr. Liebowitz has served as vice president of medical affairs, associate chief medical officer, and most recently, chief medical officer. His responsibilities have included overseeing the institution's service lines, clinical program development, physician recruitment and the NYP Making Care Better initiative. In recent years, his work has focused on regionalization of NewYork-Presbyterian's world-renowned clinical care. Under his leadership, NewYork-Presbyterian has increased access to clinical trials, reduced unwanted variability in care across its sites and enhanced the continuum of care between NewYork-Presbyterian's regional hospitals and its academic medical center.

Prior to joining NewYork-Presbyterian, Dr. Liebowitz was the medical director of strategic initiatives and network business development at Duke University Health System. He also served as the section chief of general medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. In addition, he has served as a peer reviewer for a number of prominent medical journals, and on the editorial board of the Archives of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Liebowitz is a board-certified internist who completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Massachusetts. He received his medical degree from Rutgers Medical School, as well as a master's degree in clinical research from a combined program between Duke University and the National Institutes of Health.
