PARSIPPANY, NJ--(Marketwire - March 21, 2011) - DRS Technologies, Inc., a Finmeccanica Company, announced it has received a contract valued at approximately $34.2 million from the U.S. Air Force for the continuing overhaul of Tunner aircraft cargo loaders.

The contract was awarded by the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center in Georgia to DRS' Sustainment Systems, Inc. business unit in St. Louis, Missouri. For this contract, DRS will perform depot level overhaul to return the cargo loaders to a near "zero hours/zero miles" condition.

As the Tunner prime contractor and original equipment manufacturer, DRS has provided non-stop, global support to the 60K loader for the last fifteen years.

"The work we are executing on this contract and others is to ensure that the United States Air Force remains at a high state of readiness with its 300+ Tunners that are loading and unloading cargo at more than 80 installations worldwide," states Thomas G. Cornwell, DRS Sustainment Systems vice president/general manager. "Every Airman that operates the Tunner should feel confident in knowing that DRS is committed to their mission success. Our strength is in keeping the Tunner 100% operational worldwide to ensure vital equipment spends less time on the flightline and more time in the hands of those who need it."

The Tunner is a versatile, mobile platform that supports up to six pallets of cargo weighing as much as 60,000 pounds, or 30 tons. With the Tunner, any large military transport/tanker aircraft such as the C-17, C-5, and KC-135; along with large commercial cargo aircraft, can be quickly and efficiently loaded and unloaded, dramatically improving military deployment operations.
