Drummond Group Introduces EHR Certification for Hospitals

AUSTIN, TX--(Marketwire - February 21, 2011) - Drummond Group Inc., an Office of the National Coordinator Authorized Testing and Certification Body (ONC-ATCB), has introduced its "EHR Certification Roadmap for Hospitals." Several hospitals including Vanderbilt University Medical Center provided Drummond with input into the development of the program -- making it possible to design a unique testing experience that meets the specific needs of provider organizations.

"Given the challenge we face in molding our own medical center's health IT landscape to fit into ONC's framework, I was happy to assist Drummond Group in the development of their program, EHR Certification Roadmap for Hospitals, that could help other hospitals determine their path toward meeting the requirements to receive ARRA incentives," says John L. Waller, MD, Director of Medical Informatics, Medical University of South Carolina.

Hospitals with EHRs developed in-house or with systems comprised of various technologies from multiple vendors can follow the Drummond's EHR Certification Roadmap to expediently test their software in an effort to earn ONC certification, thereby qualifying the EHR to be used in a hospital's pursuit of "meaningful use" and the corresponding incentive funds.

The roadmap meets the specific needs of hospitals by providing an evaluation of certification needs, certification gap analysis and customized testing.

To start, Drummond's Roadmap guides the hospital in cataloging the technologies in the hospital's EHR network and then performs an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Certification Gap Analysis to determine which pieces of software do and which do not require testing.

"Frequently, hospitals will have developed or obtained EHR systems over several years that comprise a number of technologies. As a result their IT leaders may not easily realize which solutions need to be tested and which don't. They basically don't know where to start. With our initiative, we help hospitals quickly determine what needs to be tested," says Rik Drummond, CEO of the Drummond Group.

This initial step helps hospitals pinpoint exactly what needs to be done in order to determine certification needs -- and subsequently to implement the technologies that will qualify for meaningful use.

"Vanderbilt has worked directly with the Drummond Group as they developed their EHR Certification Roadmap for Hospitals. Their team has provided a certification framework which helped us decide how to map our architectural strategy to the vendor-based ONC approach to testing and achieving certification to qualify for ARRA incentives," says Eric Boehme, Project Manager for the HITECH EHR Certification Program for Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Drummond Group testing proctors, who have significant software testing experience, then work to ensure that hospitals understand the required steps for testing. In essence, the proctors engage the hospitals based on the unique needs of each hospital. However, because it is a single certification program to support Meaningful Use, the hospital systems still go through the exact same test event as vendor systems based on the same ONC standardized testing scripts.

"We are just providing a level of service and expertise that hospitals can really benefit from," Drummond said. "Hospitals are not in the software business, and the testing process is not something with which they are familiar. The Roadmap makes it easy for hospitals to find their way through the testing process -- easily and without a lot of disruption."
