BALTIMORE, MD--(Marketwire - Dec 27, 2012) - The Nationally recognized DSST program -- which offers students a cost effective, time-saving way to use knowledge acquired outside the classroom to test for credit towards their college degree-seeking goals -- has surpassed 57,000 exams this calendar year. This is the first time the program has reached the 50,000 test milestone since moving to Internet-based testing (IBT), in 2006. The DSST program is designed to help active duty military and civilian students reach educational and career goals faster and at less cost. More than 1,900 institutions in the U.S. recognize DSST and award college credit toward a degree for students who successfully pass exams. Prometric, the trusted provider of market-leading test development and delivery solutions, administers DSST exams at more than 1,200 test centers in the U.S.
"By saving its students the time it takes to sit through a course as well as tuition dollars, DSST not only helps advance the careers of military members, it prepares them to gain jobs when re-entering the civilian workforce," said Michael Brannick, President and CEO of Prometric. "We have been able to deliver more than 260,000 Internet-based exams, since 2006, to active duty military, veterans and non-military college students on our Internet-based testing platform."
While nearly all DSST exams are delivered on an Internet-based platform, paper-based exams remain available. The benefits of IBT examination include increased security, timed exams, the ability to switch exam forms to prevent over-exposure and immediate results for all exams (excluding Principles of Public Speaking).
The previous highest single-year DSST exam total was 48,500, delivered in 2011. For this year, DSST exams exceeded 2011's total by more than 8,000 exams, an increase of 17 percent year-over-year.
"DSST supports the goals of our military personnel whether deployed or located on a military base through the IBT platform," said the DANTES Examinations Program Manager. "These numbers directly reflect how successful the shift has been, as well as through the program's extensive test preparation options and available counseling."
The top nationally-recognized DSST exams delivered in 2012 include:
- Principles of Supervision, Business
- Principles of Public Speaking, Humanities
- Here's to Your Health, Physical Science
- Introduction to Computing, Business
- Ethics in America, Humanities
For over 30 years, DANTES has offered and supported voluntary educational programs on behalf of the U.S. Department of Defense. DANTES authorizes up-front funding of exam fees for eligible military and their spouses at all test centers where the Internet-based exams are administered.
The American Council on Education's College Credit Recommendation Service (ACE Credit) has evaluated and recommended college credit for all 38 DSST exams. ACE Credit connects workplace learning with colleges and universities for formal courses and examinations taken in the workplace or other settings outside traditional higher education.
