Ducks Unlimited Canada Encouraged by Public Consultations on Yukon Water Strategy

WHITEHORSE, YUKON--(Marketwire - March 22, 2013) - Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) applauds the Yukon government for initiating public consultation on a Yukon Water Strategy. This marks an important step toward more refined and adaptive resource management in the Yukon that will help support long-term social, economic, and ecological sustainability and prosperity.

"Managing water quantity and quality will be a defining global challenge now and into the future," says DUC's National Manager of Boreal Programs Kevin Smith. "Working together on collective visions for water and identifying key actions are critical steps for all jurisdictions, and the Yukon has shown great leadership in their announcement this week."

Water management is a complex issue. Key elements for success include: a common understanding of the vision and principles for water management; collaboration among water decision makers in various governments and organizations, and an understanding of watersheds and how they work - particularly the critical role that wetlands play in helping to maintain water quantity and quality.

Wetlands are among the world's most productive ecosystems. Wetlands function as natural water retention ponds, prevent flooding, filter and purify water, replenish and store groundwater, reduce erosion and protect shorelines. They also provide critical habitat for waterfowl and hundreds of species of wildlife.

DUC looks forward to collaborating with the Yukon government to achieve the goals of the Yukon Water Strategy.

Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is the leader in wetland conservation. A registered charity, DUC partners with government, industry, non-profit organizations and landowners to conserve wetlands that are critical to waterfowl, wildlife and the environment. Learn more at
