Ducks Unlimited Canada Unveils Beks Farm Project

COURTENAY, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Oct. 17, 2014) - Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is proud to announce our latest project on the Courtenay River estuary. Our new 64-acre Beks Farm project is an integral piece of our conservation plans for the area.

"This is one of the most important estuaries on the B.C. coast for waterfowl," said Brad Arner, manager of provincial operations for DUC. "Our latest project will help provide food and shelter for millions of migrating birds who pass through each year."

Agricultural areas around the mouth of the Courtenay are under pressure from nearby development. Ducks, geese and swans graze the farms for leftover grasses and produce. Comox Valley is home to about a tenth of the world's trumpeter swans - a species of particular concern.

This latest acquisition would not have been possible without help from our partners. The Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation and Environment Canada via the Nature Conservancy of Canada provided funding for our project as part of the Natural Areas Conservation Plan. Hank Beks and his family also donated a substantial portion of the land to our conservation efforts.

Beks Farm adds another small piece of the conservation puzzle for B.C.'s coast. Together with our partners of the Pacific Coast Joint Venture, we are securing high priority habitat all along the pacific flyway.

"Our management of the land in tandem with the Beks family will make sure waterfowl will always have a home in the Courtenay River estuary," said Arner.

Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is the leader in wetland conservation. A registered charity, DUC partners with government, industry, non-profit organizations and landowners to conserve wetlands that are critical to waterfowl, wildlife and the environment. Learn more at
