Dumfries and Galloway Fire Service in Meltdown, Others to Follow!

DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY, SCOTLAND--(Marketwire - July 5, 2011) - The Fire Brigades Union have learned that secret plans to cut Dumfries and Galloway Fire and Rescue Service have been prepared. It is understood that the service has been asked to produce 5.8% savings over and above the 4.9% already cut this year. At least 16 options are being prepared for consideration at the instruction of the Council.

Roddy Robertson, Executive Council member for Scotland said; "The services senior officers are being asked to do the impossible. The risk to the people of D&G has not changed yet we understand that station closures, downgrading of fire cover and D&G's emergency fire control room are all being considered simply to make financial savings with no consideration of the risk to the public or measurable professional judgement."

Some of the options considered last year will be back, the removal of the second fire engines at Newton Stewart and Annan, the removal of 24hr staffing for specialist appliances as well as attacks on our members duty system and conditions of service.

The FBU are informed that these options will be brought to a Council 'star chamber' on Friday 8 July for consideration and progression to the next stage.

The FBU is also aware that the fire service in Fife faces similar dilemmas which have so far seen other fire and rescue services having to employ firefighters from Fife to avoid compulsory redundancies.

Roddy Robertson said: "This service and Fife Fire and Rescue Service show why there is a need for reform of the service and why the service needs that reform to happen now not later. We have been given public assurances that the front line will not be touched yet we have seen the loss of nearly 300 firefighter posts in the last two years and now we are facing meltdown in two of our vital services, this cannot be allowed to continue."

Following a request for up to date statistics by the National FBU on employment within the fire and rescue service by use of the Freedom of Information Act the table below represents the results from that request. We asked:
Please tell us how many (a) wholetime firefighter, (b) retained firefighter, (c) fire control room and (d) total posts (firefighters and other support staff) there were employed in your Fire and Rescue Service on 31 March 2010 and on 31 March 2011, expressed as full-time equivalents.

Paul Wilson said; "Jobs are being lost, through recruitment freezes, retirements, people leaving but not being replaced etc. These figures show that despite the Government and others undertaking to protect the frontline jobs, the reality is that jobs are being lost."
