Durham Teacher Re-elected to ETFO Executive

Rachel Gencey Re-elected to ETFO Executive Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, Education Editor, News Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 17, 2005) -
Rachel Gencey, a teacher with the Durham District School Board and president of the Durham ETFO Teacher Local, was re- elected to the Executive of the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) at ETFO's annual meeting today.

"ETFO's outstanding success in negotiations this past year was possible because we presented a strong and united front. That solidarity allowed us to achieve 200 minutes of preparation time per week for all ETFO teacher members and meaningful improvements to salary, benefits, and working conditions," Gencey told the 600 meeting delegates.

"Locals are the foundation of our union. Our provincial organization must be driven by the needs of members and must be responsive to and respectful of our locals. We have to capture the imagination of our newest members and show that ETFO is their union too," Gencey said.

In 11 years of teaching Gencey has been an occasional teacher, a teacher librarian, a classroom teacher, and a core French teacher. She has served on her local executive as professional development chair, grievance officer, chief negotiator, vice-president, and president. She has been a member of the provincial Executive since 2004.

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) represents 65,000 public elementary school teachers and education workers across Ontario and is the largest teacher union in Canada outside of Quebec.
