The Dutch Chambers of Commerce Chooses IBM Systems to Virtualize Computing Environment

Government Agencies Select POWER5-Based IBM DS8000 Series Storage Over EMC Storage

WOERDEN, HOLLAND -- (MARKET WIRE) -- March 14, 2005 -- IBM today announced that the joint Dutch Chambers of Commerce have installed IBM's latest storage and servers to simplify its computing infrastructure and help reduce management costs through virtualization technologies. Vereniging van Kamers van Koophandel or the Society of Chambers of Commerce (VVK) chose IBM TotalStorage DS8000 Series storage and eServer iSeries systems as the heart of a new technology infrastructure consolidation project, to support the legal, import and export mission critical applications of its business.

The new systems, sold by IBM Business Partner eStorage, will support 21 Dutch Chambers from one location using IBM's virtualization technologies that allow one physical machine to look like multiple machines. One IBM eServer i5 570 is partitioned to act like 14 servers while IBM's DS8000 storage solution running Tivoli Storage Manager will be able to be partitioned into two parts allowing for storage virtualization. The POWER5 processor, which is the heart of both the DS8000 and i5 570, is designed with the unique ability to guarantee the isolation and security of data and applications within a partition. Additionally, the solution will be connected to an IBM TotalStorage Data Retention DR450 solution, to assist VVK with compliance and data retention needs.

Says Mansour Jouhri, IT-architecture Manager at VVK, "Each Chamber of Commerce is independent, having its own applications and data. For us, it is vital to preserve this distributed organisation while taking full advantage of centralisation benefits at the same time. IBM's partitioning technology provided the means to do just that. Not only was it a financially attractive solution, through on demand pricing in which we only pay what we use, it also gave us a chance to consolidate servers and storage. This solution provides us with endless scalability, in a true on demand fashion."

VVK chose the DS8000 because it delivers the same top performance as the iSeries' systems -- both have built in performance with POWER5 technology that can support partitioning. With these systems VVK can offer each Chamber of Commerce a fixed-storage space for a fixed price. When more storage is needed, VVK can easily either assign extra disk space to a partition or put in a new disk, without having to take the system down. Additionally, VVK is looking to take advantage of the logical partitioning and virtualization capabilities that the DS8000 system will offer to help improve total cost of ownership.

"IBM is betting the storage game has changed with the introduction of our breakthrough DS8000 systems," said Andy Monshaw, General Manager, IBM Storage Systems, IBM. "By offering IBM iSeries servers and storage together, we are able to provide our customers like VVK with a simplified computing environment based on proven technology."

Before deciding on the DS8000 for their storage solutions, VVK evaluated offerings from competitors like EMC, but selected IBM due to its technology innovation and history, IBM's POWER roadmap and implementation within the DS8000 solution, and the on demand aspects of the DS8000.

"We're very proud that we've been able to sell the first IBM TotalStorage DS8000 in such a competitive marketplace," says Sybe de Jong, commercial manager at IBM Business Partner eStorage. "VVK had initially chosen EMC. Being able to change their minds was a great success that took a lot of effort. However, the differences and benefits of the DS8000 convinced the customer that this system will become the new standard in the marketplace. It is a well-built product and a sound investment, now and in the future."

Maarten Leijenaar, Brand Manager IBM TotalStorage at IBM Netherlands, claims: "Simplifying the customer's infrastructure is a key priority for IBM. The TotalStorage DS8000 and the other products that IBM has announced recently, offer the right solution to fit this priority. At VVK, we demonstrate this, by helping them to drastically reduce management costs through revolutionary products based on proven technology."

IBM Global Services worked with IBM Business Partner eStorage to identify the right IT solution to consolidate the business processes at VVK. The i5 joins the VVK's datacenter with other iSeries, pSeries and xSeries systems, running IBM WebSphere and Dominio.
