Dyno's Top Ten Tips for Home Security Whilst on Holiday

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - June 27, 2011) - With the Easter break now behind us, the UK is beginning to look forward to the summer holidays. Millions of homeowners leave their houses behind each year as they jet off for relaxing beach breaks or exhilarating adventure holidays. Unfortunately, many will return to the nightmare of a burgled home and will have to deal with the unexpected costs of emergency locksmiths and insurance excesses. Here are Dyno's Top 10 tips for making sure your home is secure whilst you're away:

Keep Quiet

Be careful about who you reveal your holiday plans to. Many people will update their status on social networking sites to tell friends about where they are going, without realising that they are also advertising their absence to a wider net of people. You should also never put you full home address on your luggage when travelling, as a thief will know that you are away and will have full details of where you live.

Cancel deliveries

Cancel any milk or deliveries of newspapers; this will make sure any potential intruders will not be alerted to your absence by their build-up on the doorstep. It will also save you some cash!

Divert Post

Similarly you can ask a neighbour or friend to collect your post during the time you are away. Royal Mail also offers a "Keepsafe" service which will keep your post for you whilst you are on holiday, or you can get your post diverted to a friend directly.

Out of Sight

Make sure all valuables and expensive equipment cannot easily be seen from any windows or doors. If you have a safe, make sure any small valuables or important documents are locked away safely.

Security Timers

Security timers are extremely handy gadgets for making your home appear occupied during the time that you are away. They usually work as a plug socket adaptor, which works on a timer to turn on lights and other appliances at regular intervals. An available extra is the Remote Phone Switcher, which allows you dial into your landline to change the timer settings.

Check your windows

A third of all burglars will get in through a window, so it's vital to check these are all secure. Window locks are available at a small price from most DIY shops and should fit discreetly inside the pane. When replacing any windows, make sure to invest in British Standard "Windows of Enhanced Security".

Check Your Insurance Fine Print

36% of insurance policies will not provide protection for a property that is vacant for more than a month, so make sure you check the fine print before going on an extended holiday.

Tell a friend

Make sure you tell a trusted neighbour that you are going away and ask them to check your home regularly for any signs of a break-in. Home Office figures indicate that a property is 4 times more likely to be hit if it has already been broken into, so you do not want to risk multiple burglaries.
