E. W. Scripps Company Launches Mobile DTV Service With Roundbox Inc.

Roundbox Deploys Services Platform in Multi-Vendor Environment

FLORHAM PARK, NJ--(Marketwire - September 13, 2010) -  Roundbox, Inc., the global leader in mobile broadcast software, today announced that E. W. Scripps Company, a diverse media concern with interests in newspaper publishing, broadcast television stations and licensing and syndication, has deployed its first Mobile DTV service powered by an end-to-end solution delivered by Roundbox, Harris Corporation and Axcera. The flagship station of E. W. Scripps, WXYZ-TV Detroit recently went on air with their Mobile DTV service at the OMVC-sponsored Mobile DTV Showcase, held for the benefit of Detroit automobile executives.

As one of the drivers of Mobile DTV, Scripps is part of a dozen major commercial broadcast media companies who have teamed up to form Pearl Mobile DTV Company LLC., a consortium to provide content and spectrum for a national mobile DTV service aimed to reach 150 million U.S. residents.

"Roundbox, Harris and Axcera worked exceptionally hard to get us on the air in a very constrained timeframe," said Michael Doback, vice president, engineering, broadcast division, of the EW Scripps Company. "We have been very impressed with the interoperability of this multiple vendor solution and would not have launched as planned without their combined support."

This solution highlights the cross-company collaboration and full-scale interoperability between the Roundbox products and those of other vendors. Products included in this deployment are:

  • The Roundbox Mobile DTV Server with Signaling and Announcement software, which generates service signaling and transmits a rich Electronic Service Guide (ESG).

  • The Harris NetVX™ video networking system transcodes the video into IP audio/video streams.

  • The Harris Synchrony™ mobile networking adapter combines the mobile content with the main ATSC signal.

  • This bitstream is then fed to the Axcera transmitter, which is fitted with Axcera's Mobile DTV "Axciter" Intelligent Modulator, configured to broadcast both the Mobile DTV and fixed programming.

Broadcasters are able to easily deliver an enhanced communications experience for their viewers by adding Roundbox Widget software, which enables the distribution of a wide range of data services such as news, weather, sports, traffic and other types of content typically published on station websites.

"Whether it's updates on breaking news or sports, or rapidly changing developments in threatening weather, viewers in our area know that WXYZ is passionate about delivering important information when -- and where -- our audience needs it," said Ed Fernandez, the station's vice president and general manager. "The best station in the market got better with this Mobile DTV solution because we can offer one more convenient way to connect our audience to the events in this community, which is great news for our viewers as well as the advertisers who want to reach them."

"As one of the leaders driving deployments, Scripps sends a clear message to both consumers, and device manufacturers that the Mobile DTV market is ready to flourish," said Vinod Valloppillil, chief marketing officer at Roundbox. "We are pleased to be working with Scripps as they roll out Mobile DTV and expand their mobile service offerings."
