EaglePicher Technologies, LLC Awarded $ 1.4 Million Contract From the Office of Naval Research

Thin Film Project to Improve Battery Systems for Critical U.S. Weapon Systems

JOPLIN, MO--(CCNMatthews - November 14, 2006) - EaglePicher Technologies, LLC today announced that it has won a follow-on contract from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) valued at approximately $1.4 million to incorporate thin film processes for improvements in battery systems manufactured by EaglePicher for use in critical U.S. Navy and Marine Corps weapon systems.

The contract is in addition to $1.8 million already awarded for the first phase of the project, which began in June of this year. The thin film project involves applying technical approaches to manufacturing thin component layers for multiple battery chemistries. These include manufacturing and processing techniques for thin anodes, cathodes, and separators for lithium carbon monofluoride, reserve lithium oxyhalide, and reserve thermal batteries.

"This is terrific acknowledgement of our capabilities in cell design and performance," said Steve Westfall, President of EaglePicher Technologies. "We will now incorporate expected improvements from our earlier work into full scale cell design and then test the new cells against existing cell performance data."

EaglePicher's goal is to provide production-ready, web-coated (a slurry thinly spread onto a substrate or web) cathode technology and other thin electrode technologies that will generate both cost and technical benefits for lithium carbon monofluoride and reserve lithium oxyhalide batteries. The result should be smaller, lighter and lower cost batteries for the U.S. Military and process improvements that are adaptable to multiple battery chemistries, including potential future use on lithium ion applications.

This award is part of a multiyear program that should result in new military battery applications for EaglePicher Technologies.
