Early-Stage Investor Claremont Creek Ventures Adds Brian Berger, MD and Dave Lyons, Former IDEO Executive and Tesla Head of Engineering, to Investment Team

Berger Joins as Associate; Lyons Joins as Entrepreneur-in-Residence (EIR)

OAKLAND, CA--(Marketwire - Sep 12, 2011) - Claremont Creek Ventures, a seed and early-stage venture capital firm known for turbocharging the uncommon startup, today announced the addition of two investment professionals who have impressive experience either in the medical sector or in product leadership at early-stage cleantech innovators.

Brian Berger, MD, 41, joins Claremont Creek Venture's digital healthcare investment team as an associate to invest in new healthcare startups combining advances in information technology with genomics. Dave Lyons, 47, joined the firm as an entrepreneur-in-residence (EIR) who will focus initially on the firm's investments in clean technology management and other projects leveraging his history of leading engineering/design efforts on breakthrough products.

BRIAN BERGER BACKGROUND

Berger was previously a co-founder of Blast, a medical device startup that developed a non-invasive cancer detection device, and founder of 81 Octaves, a startup that worked to establish a global network of virtually linked tumor ablation centers.

Before he held these positions, Berger was co-founder and associate medical director of Baylor Radiosurgery Center in Dallas and, before that, an assistant professor of radiation oncology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He holds an M.S. in management from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, an M.D. degree from the University of Texas Southwestern and an A.B. in chemistry from Duke University.

"Because of his background as a medical doctor and a medical device startup executive, Brian will add significant credibility to Claremont Creek's investment team. He also understands our strategy of investing in highly promising startups that are parlaying tremendous advances in information technology and biology to help deliver better health care at a lower price," said John Steuart, a Claremont Creek co-founder and managing director. "Brian is knowledgeable and passionately interested in this area and will help us expand our portfolio of young companies who are involved in the latest medical innovations," Steuart added.

DAVE LYONS BACKGROUND

Lyons is a former vice president of engineering at Glacier Bay, a power management technology firm, and former director of engineering at Tesla Motors, where he led and expanded the development teams for each of the company's core technologies through their formative stages. In addition, Lyons worked for a number of years for design and innovation consulting firm IDEO. Immediately prior to joining Claremont Creek Ventures, he was also an EIR at Accel Partners, specializing in new energy technology development.

Lyons holds an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, a master's degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford, and a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Paul Straub, a Claremont Creek Ventures Director who specializes in energy technology investments, said, "Dave has a remarkable background leading entrepreneurial teams and introducing hugely innovative products. We are thrilled to have him and I expect he'll focus a large part of his time exploring new opportunities in energy technology where we continue to see enormous potential," Straub added.
