Eastex Evolves Network With Carrier VoIP Gear From Nortel

Nortel CS1500 Softswitch Enables Delivery of Advanced VoIP and Unified Messaging Services across Rural East Texas

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 30, 2009) - Eastex Telephone Coop., Inc. (Eastex), one of the largest rural carriers in Texas, is upgrading its network with Carrier VoIP Services from Nortel* (OTCBB:NRTLQ). The powerful carrier VoIP infrastructure will enable Eastex to provide carrier-grade voice and multimedia services to its more than 34,000 residential and business subscribers across rural East Texas.

"Nortel continues to meet our needs and provide the level of service essential to our success," said Rusty Dorman, assistant general manager, Eastex. "The perfect example occurred when a recent rain storm caused a tree to come crashing through our switching facility, which interrupted service. Nortel's technicians were quickly on-site to manually dry each circuit pack and bring the telephone exchange back up and working before nightfall. After working with Nortel for our infrastructure needs for nearly 30 years, I couldn't pick a better partner to work with as we move to the next phase of our network evolution."

Eastex plans to upgrade its legacy DMS switches with Nortel's Communication Server (CS) 1500 softswitch, which will allow them to offer new communication services such as VoIP, Centrex IP business services and next-generation multimedia communications. In addition, the CS 1500 offers power and floor space savings of up to 50 percent.

"Nortel's CS 1500 softswitch allows regional service providers like Eastex to leverage their existing infrastructure investments to meet customer needs today, while also providing a foundation that will allow them to launch advanced services, such as single number service, unified messaging and integrated web portal with click-to-call," said Samih Elhage, president, Carrier VoIP and Application Solutions, Nortel.

Nortel's CS 1500 Softswitch

  • Nortel's CS 1500 is a proven, next-generation carrier VoIP softswitch that provides a powerful platform for IP communication services.
  • Nortel recently introduced new product enhancements to the CS 1500, which allow service providers to offer new revenue generating applications like unified messaging, single number service, subscriber web portal and on-demand conferencing.
  • Nortel's CS1500 is the leading VoIP platform for rural and mid-size markets. The CS 1500 allows service providers to re-use existing equipment and offers an extremely cost-effective evolution for existing Nortel DMS-10 and DMS-100 switches, as well as other technologies widely installed in current carrier telephone systems such as DCO and EWSD switches.

Recently published reports from Dell'Oro Group and Infonetics Research ranked Nortel as the worldwide leader with the largest revenues in the carrier softswitch market for the first quarter of 2009. Nortel has shipped more than 110 million Carrier VoIP and Multimedia ports to over 340 wireline and wireless carriers globally. In addition, Nortel provides VoIP solutions to two thirds of IDC's worldwide listing of top 20 carriers (by revenue).
