Ecclesiastical Announces Changes to Group Management Structure and Senior Leadership Team

Ecclesiastical builds for the future by strengthening Group management

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - June 17, 2013) - Following the appointment of Mark Hews as Group Chief Executive on 1 May 2013, Ecclesiastical Insurance Office plc ('Ecclesiastical' or 'the Group') has today announced changes to the Group management structure and its senior leadership team with immediate effect.

The key management structure changes include the creation of the role and appointment of a Deputy Group Chief Executive, and the establishment of a new Group structure with three business divisions - General Insurance, Investment Management, and Broking and Advisory.

As a result of the structural change, the Group is also making the following key changes to its senior leadership team:

  • Jacinta Whyte is appointed Deputy Group Chief Executive and an Executive Director of Ecclesiastical, subject to regulatory approval, with responsibility for the Group's general insurance operations worldwide. She will also continue as General Manager and Chief Agent of Ecclesiastical's Canadian business and remain accountable for its performance. David Lane (CEO Ecclesiastical Ireland) and Andrew Moon (CEO Ansvar Australia) will continue to run the Group's Irish and Australian operations and will be reporting into Jacinta. Jacinta will also assume the role of interim Managing Director of Ecclesiastical's UK general insurance business with immediate effect.

  • After almost eight years with Ecclesiastical, Steve Wood, Managing Director of the Group's general insurance businesses in the UK and an Executive Director of Ecclesiastical, has decided to pursue fresh opportunities and will therefore be leaving the Group. During his time at Ecclesiastical, Steve has made a considerable contribution to the development of the UK business in particular building our reputation in the UK broker market. He has also played an important role in reshaping the group, leading the partial sale of the Group's life business and the purchase of South Essex Insurance Brokers.

  • Kevin Jones will take up a new role as Group Strategy and Corporate Affairs Director with responsibility for strategy development and implementation; internal and external communications; and the Office of the CEO, which includes the Group's legal and secretariat functions. Kevin has been with the company for nearly three years and, in that time, has played a key role in sharpening the Group's strategic focus.

  • In order to further strengthen the leadership team on a Group level, recruitment will start for the following two senior roles in the near future:

    • Group Chief Underwriting Officer with responsibility for developing a consistent underwriting framework across the Group and strengthening the Group's underwriting capabilities, and

    • Group Chief Risk Officer with Group-wide responsibility for risk management and actuarial including critical projects, such as Solvency II.

Commenting on these changes, Mark Hews, Group Chief Executive, said:

"I'm delighted with Jacinta's appointment as Deputy Group Chief Executive. She brings a wealth of experience along with an outstanding track record of building profitable insurance businesses and high performing teams. I'm also pleased that she has agreed to assume direct control over the UK general insurance business whilst we complete our search for a successor to Steve. In the coming months Jacinta will be splitting her time between the UK and Canada, ensuring both operations continue to have strong leadership during this period of transition.

"It is critical that our Group continues to benefit from a clear long-term strategy so I'm delighted that Kevin has agreed to take on a broader role within the Group. In his new role he will be responsible for developing and driving forward the Group's strategy, internal and external communications, and managing the CEO's Office which includes the Group's legal and secretariat functions."

"Ecclesiastical is known for its expertise in its specialist markets, its outstanding customer service and reputation for claims management, and these appointments, alongside a number of other key changes, will no doubt build on these foundations to create a simpler and more efficient organisation with clearer accountabilities.

"The Board and I personally would like to thank Steve Wood for his contribution to Ecclesiastical and wish him all the best as he moves on to new opportunities."

Commenting on these changes, Steve Wood said: "After nearly eight years with Ecclesiastical, Mark and I have concluded that it is time for a fresh start. I have enjoyed my time at the company, and I wish Mark and the whole Ecclesiastical team all the very best for the future."
