ALLAN, SASKATCHEWAN--(Marketwire - Aug. 17, 2012) - Today, the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, and the Honourable Donna Harpauer, MLA for Humboldt, on behalf of Jim Reiter, Minister of Government Relations, participated in the grand opening of the Allan and District Swimming Pool. Speeches, a ribbon cutting, and of course swimming were part of the grand opening celebration.
"Today's opening reflects our Government's commitment to enhancing community infrastructure, while creating jobs, growth, and long-term prosperity," said Minister Yelich. "Our investment in the Allan and District Swimming Pool will ensure that children and families will be able to enjoy recreational opportunities for years to come."
The Government of Canada invested $489,166 for this project through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program. The Government of Saskatchewan contributed $191,666, with the community providing the balance of the funding for a total project cost of just under $1 million. The Town of Allan also received a donation of $100,000 from PotashCorp Allan for the replacement of the pool house.
"The upgrades to the Allan pool are a great thing for this community and we are pleased to be able to celebrate its grand opening," Minister Harpauer said on behalf of Government Relations Minister Reiter. "Recreational infrastructure contributes to a strong quality of life and also helps to build the Saskatchewan Advantage."
Funding allowed the local swimming pool to receive a complete transformation, with workers rehabilitating and lining the pool basin, constructing a new deck structure, and completing phase one of the pool change house. In addition to the work done with RInC, community volunteers put in a significant amount of time and energy to make this project a reality.
"Once again, the joy of swimming in Allan on a hot summer's day has been renewed for all. Not long ago, this was only a distant dream of a hopeful fundraising committee," said Allan Mayor, Larry Sommerfeld. "We are very delighted to have been the beneficiary of assistance from PotashCorp Allan, donors, volunteers and fundraisers, but most especially the Economic Action Plan by the Government of Canada and Government of Saskatchewan. Without their support, we would still sadly be looking at a dry hole in the ground."
"PotashCorp was pleased to support this project given its importance to the people of Allan," said Larry Long, General Manager, PotashCorp Allan. "Recreational facilities like this one promote community-building and help attract new people looking for great places to live, work and raise a family."
The Allan and District Swimming Pool plays an important role in the community and surrounding area accommodating structured physical and recreational activities for all age groups. This project will enhance Allan's recreational infrastructure, while stimulating economic activity.
