Economic Action Plan Helps Alberta's Agri-Processing Sector

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - June 28, 2011) - Canada's Economic Action Plan has provided real results for Canada's food producers and helped them deliver the highest quality food to consumers at home and abroad. MP Michelle Rempel (Calgary Centre-North), on behalf of Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz, congratulated the Siljan's Crispy Cup Company today on improving their business with the support of $48,000 from the federal government. This investment has helped the company increase productivity and improve operational efficiency.

"Canada's Economic Action Plan is helping farmers acquire new technology, new equipment, and new expertise that will keep them on the cutting edge here at home and around the world," said MP Rempel. "This investment helped Siljan's Crispy Cup Company install new state-of-the-art equipment to increase their production capacity."

The company installed a new croustade production line consisting of an improved dough processor, pumping unit, processing unit and tumbler.

"Thanks to this investment from the Government of Canada, Siljans Crispy Cups Co. is replacing its 40 year old manufacturing equipment with a state-of-the-art 2010 generation line," said BJ Ersson, President and Owner of Siljans Crispy Cup Co. Ltd. "This updated line, which was designed, engineered and constructed by two local engineering companies, increased productivity by 50 per cent and resulted in considerable energy savings too."

This repayable contribution is delivered by the Agricultural Flexibility Fund through the AgriProcessing Initiative, a five-year, up to $50-million initiative designed to enhance the competitiveness of the food processing sector in Canada. It provides support to existing companies for projects that involve the adoption of innovative and new-to-company manufacturing technologies and processes that are essential to sustaining and improving the sector's position in today's global marketplace.
