Economic Club Continues Nation-Wide Mental Health Tour With Special Guest Margaret Trudeau

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Nov. 5, 2014) - The Economic Club of Canada, in partnership with Excellence Canada & Lundbeck Canada, Mental Health International and Cookson James Loyalty will continue its national awareness campaign and corporate challenge in Vancouver as part of a "coordinated assault" to de-stigmatize mental health in the workplace and to change the face of healthcare in Canada.

Many organizations are unaware of the massive hit on their bottom line as a direct result of mental illness and mental health related problems equating to $20 billion GDP in lost productivity. A recent global workplace survey conducted by Ipsos Mori highlights the stark reality of mental illness in the Canadian workplace. The survey found that 40 per cent of the workers reporting a depression diagnosis did not tell their employer about their problem, which is above the global average of 33 per cent and is the highest rate recorded in the global survey next to the United States. One quarter of employees diagnosed with depression could not continue to work during their last episode of depression, with an average of more than two months off work (49 lost working days) in that episode. The global average was 32 lost working days.

The WELLth Management nation-wide event series, corporate challenge and memorandum will help set a national standard for psychological health and safety in the workplace, while inspiring corporate Canada to implement mental health policies and practices in the workplace.
