Economic Stress Equals Bullying at Work

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Oct. 15, 2008) - Economic fear increases stress, and ongoing stress is one factor that causes workers to bully others. Bullying and disrespect at work is already costing companies $20,000 per employee per year. Erica Pinsky, a workplace bullying and harassment expert, warns employers that many workers in Canada and the US are worried about the economy and how what is happening is going to affect them. "When people feel angry, frustrated or upset by events over which they have no control, they often choose to vent that anger at work."

"Employers must see the potential danger and talk about it before it starts affecting their bottom line. In tough economic times, bullying in the workplace increases, causing productivity to drop while fear, conflict and absenteeism increase. Bullying causes havoc in the workplace. In some cases, workplace violence will be the unfortunate result," says Erica.

Erica recommends companies should talk about how the current economic climate is affecting the business and their employees. Identify signs of stress such as frequent emotional outbursts, talkative employees becoming quiet, and well groomed people "letting themselves go". Offer concrete suggestions on how to cope with stress: deep breathing, exercise, making time for fun activities and focusing on things we have control over. Encourage employees to get help from the company's employee assistance program.
