Editorial Exclusive: Musicworks Spring Issue Celebrates "The Year of Jean Derome"

TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - Apr 10, 2015) - In the new issue of Musicworks (Spring 2015, #121), Montreal flutist, saxophonist, and composer Jean Derome talks with writer Lawrence Joseph about key moments, collaborations, and ideas from his life, so far, in music. Derome was recently awarded a Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec lifetime achievement award, recognizing (among other things) his key role in the development of musique actuelle, a mixture of rock, jazz, folk, and contemporary music.

Derome's creative work hits the spotlight in 2015 in many performances and new projects. The Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville (May 14-17, 2015) opens with a new Derome composition, Résistances, for 20 musicians. The official announcement of plans for "The Year of Jean Derome" happens April 28, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., in Montreal's Maison de la culture Mont-Royal.

"What I see now is a fantastic change, with younger musicians rediscovering this kind of music," Derome says. "This brings closer meetings between Anglo and Franco musicians in Montreal, which is positive. A lot of musicians have come here to play with me and others from the scene, which is a bit of a responsibility, but definitely Montreal has become a magnet for creative music in general."

Musicworks #121 also explores the eclectic musical journeys of Vancouver erhu virtuoso Lan Tung; the boundary-pushing verve of Canadian soprano Barbara Hannigan, the multifaceted muse of cellist-composer Cris Derksen; and the new creative frontiers of Alex Zhang Hungtai (formerly known as Dirty Beaches). Musicworks is thrilled to publish one of the first English-language features on the late Walter Smetak, a Swiss-Brazilian cellist, transdisciplinary artist, and mystic, who invented 150 plásticas sonoras (sound sculptures). Musicworks is on Canadian newsstands now. Only subscribers receive the companion CD with the print edition of the magazine.
