Editorial Feature: Nissan Leaf Drivers Provide Insights on Realities of EV Range Anxiety

TORRANCE, CA--(Marketwire - Sep 29, 2011) - In this first comprehensive look at the real-world electric vehicle (EV) experience, Business Fleet Magazine asked five Nissan Leaf users to share their stories.

In a two-part series in the Auto Focus blog, Business Fleet takes a look at the ordering and buying process, charging challenges, figuring costs per mile and the overall driving experience. Drivers share their insights on battery maintenance and longevity, as well as how to stretch as many miles as possible out of battery range.

The article finds that the specter of range anxiety -- one of the biggest perceived barriers to large-scale EV adoption -- isn't as daunting as anticipated. By understanding the current limitations of an EV battery and analyzing driving patterns and behaviors, these users are successfully integrating electric vehicles into their daily lives.

George Whiteside, an acupuncturist and massage therapist in Seattle, admits he "was not an EV enthusiast" and "was leery of the technology." However, "It's amazing how adequate (the Leaf's range) is," Whiteside says. "We rarely have to charge anywhere else but home. For what the car is designed to do, a commuter car, it covers about 80 to 90 percent of our driving."
