Edmonton Economic Development Corporation: TR Labs Drives Competitiveness in Western Canada

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Aug. 24, 2012) - A member of the Greater Edmonton Regional Technology Alliance, TRLabs is one of Canada's largest information and communications technology consortiums -helping to spur innovation to improve Canada's global competitiveness.

TRLabs, created in 1986 and with 82 active patents today, employs academia, students, industry partners and staff researchers in five different labs across Western Canada, who work together in a collaborative research environment.

It has continually generated new technologies and intellectual property, such as prototype development, technology and system integration, and technology assessments. Recently, TRLabs announced it would facilitate a partnership between the Alberta government and Jalisco, Mexico to jointly explore technology research, development, and commercialization opportunities.

"TRLabs plays a critical role in supporting innovation in the Edmonton region," says Mike Wo, executive director of economic growth and development at Edmonton Economic Development Corporation (EEDC). "As Edmonton's technology industry grows, collaborative help from organizations similar to TRLabs is crucial for keeping our city competitive and entrepreneurial."

As a regional alliance member, TRLabs belongs to Canada's only grouping of incubators and technology service providers that nourish the success and growth of emerging knowledge-based companies and coordinate the region's business incubators.

Other alliance members include EEDC, TEC Edmonton, novaNAIT, Northern Alberta Business Incubator, Startup Edmonton, Business Link, National Institute of Nanotechnology and the National Research Council's Industrial Research and Assistance Program.

The Edmonton Research Park (ERP) houses dozens of research companies and is managed by Edmonton Economic Development Corporation (EEDC). The ERP is also a stakeholder in TEC Edmonton, a joint venture with the University of Alberta.
