The Edmonton Public Library (EPL) is pleased to announce the opening of its first library vending machine at Century Park Light Rail Transit (LRT) station and invite media to attend the official opening of the EPL Lending Machine.

The EPL Lending Machine is a vending machine with library materials for customers to borrow. It will be stocked with paperbacks, DVDs and video games, and coupled with a return drop-off box, to provide added convenience to daily commuters. EPL is the first public library in Canada to have a complete borrowing system and drop-off location outside of a library building.

"We are so excited to bring this innovative library service to south Edmonton," said Executive Director, Public Services, Pilar Martinez. "This pilot project will help us explore the feasibility of alternative delivery methods of library services as the City continues to grow and expand."

EPL collaborated with the City's Transportation Department to select the new Century Park LRT station for its first Lending Machine pilot. Century Park is the most southerly of the LRT stations, and is expected to be a very high-traffic location.

"EPL's Lending Machine extends library services along the LRT which has exposure to 100,000 riders per day," said Bob Boutilier, General Manager of the City of Edmonton's Transportation Department. "Being an avid reader myself, I think it's a great service to our riders and the City."

The Lending Machine has capacity for approximately 400 items and has already received a positive response from customers.

"We just happened to see EPL's Lending Machine and return chute coming off the LRT, and are ecstatic about the added convenience EPL's giving us," said long-time EPL customer and father of three, Joel Milne-Epp. "Now I can drop our piles of books off on my way to work."

Note to Editor/ News Director: A brief opening ceremony is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 23. Media are asked to RSVP to Susan Wong Armstrong at swarmstrong@epl.ca.
