Edmonton Tourism: TELUS World of Science Makes Da Vinci and Van Gogh Come Alive

Edmonton, Alberta's TELUS hosts interactive, educational events throughout the summer and beyond

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - July 27, 2009) - This summer TELUS World of Science in Edmonton plays host to the Canadian premiere of Da Vinci: The Genius and also features Van Gogh: Brush with Genius, an IMAX film highlighting the talent of the painter responsible for pieces such as Sunflowers and Starry Night. "Two geniuses are better than one," says Donalda DaSilva Pelton, Advertising & Promotions Manager with TELUS World of Science.

"To learn more about these great artists and to see their work and techniques up close is a real eye-opener," says DaSilva Pelton. "When you see Van Gogh's brushstrokes on the IMAX screen and when you see how da Vinci's Mona Lisa evolved, layer by layer, you realize why they were called geniuses."

Da Vinci: The Genius runs for a limited time in Edmonton, May 30 to September 7, 2009. This comprehensive exhibition touches on many aspects of Leonardo Da Vinci's vast list of accolades. Known as one of the world's most hailed minds, Da Vinci's expertise roams from inventor to artist to scientist to botanist, with his work being as relevant now as it was during his lifetime.

Da Vinci: The Genius is a culmination of art and science, which originated in Italy and took more than 10 years to build and perfect. Visitors will be captivated by the information provided on da Vinci's mysterious alphabet and mirror-writing technique and fascinated by the more than 150 interactive reproductions of his various projects and works, including da Vinci's time machine.

French engineer Pascal Cottee's painstaking research has resulted in the creation and compilation of "Secrets of the Mona Lisa," a display exploring the Mona Lisa. "Secrets of the Mona Lisa" shocks the art world with insight on the Mona Lisa's original paint colour and a reproduction of the masterpiece that has been called its most accurate.

Among other popular things to do in Edmonton this summer is Van Gogh: Brush with Genius which runs from May 30 to September 7. Immersed with colour and rich with art, it gives the viewer a chance to become entrenched in Van Gogh's life journey, his brilliance and his darkness, as well as the places from which he sought inspiration.

There are plenty of other exciting films throughout the summer at the TELUS World of Science. Harkening the thrill of space exploration through stunning visuals gleaned from one of humankind's most defining moments - man's first landing on the moon - FLY ME TO THE MOON chronicles three pre-teen flies who live across from Cape Canaveral in 1969.

Also the Edmonton calendar of events this summer is the IMAX film Wild Ocean: Where Africa Meets the Sea tackles the topic of global warming and over-fishing, and how both of these issues affect the local land and migration of fish up the Kwa Zulu Native Wild Coast.

Robert Redford narrates viewers through Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk, which emphasizes the importance that everyone plays in the preservation of one of earth's most precious resources.

Interactive learning is the name of the game at TELUS World of Science, with themed exhibit galleries on-site to provide guests with a hands-on experience that is sure to encourage questions, spark curiosity and result in a ton of fun!

Take your TELUS World of Science adventure to a galactic level in Space Place, where visitors get to try on an astronaut suit, operate a robotic device, determine whether or not there is life on other planets, and of course, incept all asteroids that are en route to the planet Earth.

If Space Place has you hooked on the sky, be sure to make time for the Margaret Zeilder Star Theatre, where an out-of-the-ordinary evening is never out of the question in Canada's largest planetarium dome theatre, while Venus, Jupiter and Saturn are but a gaze-away at the TELUS World of Science Observatory, which is free to visit.
