Edmonton's Students Compete in Culinary Challenge

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Feb. 10, 2011) - Edmonton's fourth annual High School Culinary Challenge will be held at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) on Saturday, February 12, 2011 Catch students in action as they compete for culinary excellence between 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Presented by the Canadian Culinary Federation — Edmonton chapter — the competition encourages Greater Edmonton's high school students to pursue rewarding careers in the culinary arts. This year, 13 high schools will compete for scholarships and an apprenticeship placement with Edmonton's leading chefs.

Each participating high school has entered a team of three students who must create a three-course meal (soup, entrée and dessert) for six people in three hours. The courses will be plated and presented for judging. All teams will be honoured and the top three teams will receive special award recognition at an awards lunch on March 10, 2011 at the Shaw Conference Centre.

"We hope this unique, challenging, hands-on competition will really stir high school students to seriously consider the many creative opportunities in our demanding profession," says Chef Simon Smotkowicz, executive chef of the Shaw Conference Centre and president of the Canadian Culinary Federation Edmonton. Competing students will have the opportunity to apply for specially-created scholarship - mentorship packages. Up to three students will receive scholarships for post-secondary tuition, uniforms, books and knives. They will also participate in a three-year mentorship program. Over the course of the three year apprenticeship, the students will work in some of the best kitchens in Greater Edmonton.

The Canadian Culinary Federation is a not-for-profit association uniting chefs and cooks across Canada in a common dedication to professional excellence. The Canadian Culinary Federation was founded in 1963.
