Edson Service Canada Centre Now Offers Passport Services

EDSON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Jan. 19, 2011) - Residents of Edson will now be able to apply for a passport at their local Service Canada Centre. The Honourable Rob Merrifield, Minister of State (Transport) and Member of Parliament for Yellowhead, announced this new service today.

This expansion of passport services falls within the areas of responsibility of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, and the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

"These new passport services will make it easier for Edson residents to apply for a passport, and will bridge the gap between urban and rural service accessibility," said Minister of State Merrifield. "Service Canada and Passport Canada continue to work together to provide secure, knowledgeable and quality identity management services to Canadians. This service will also continue to be offered at my constituency office."

Edson Service Canada staff will accept standard passport applications, review them for completeness and forward them to Passport Canada for processing. In addition, they will validate citizenship documents to ensure that applicants have provided an acceptable proof of Canadian citizenship, which will allow them to retain their original documents. Any citizenship documents that cannot be validated on site will be forwarded to Passport Canada for further examination.

There are over 230 passport service points across Canada, including 34 Passport Canada offices, 144 Service Canada offices (as of January 31, 2011) and 56 designated Canada Post outlets that provide assistance to passport applicants.

Service Canada offers single-window access to a wide range of Government of Canada programs and services for citizens through call centres, the Internet, and more than 600 points of service located across the country.
