Educational Assistants Ratify Settlement With Lakehead District School Board

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 12, 2008) - Members of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF/FEESO) District 6A Educational Assistants (EA) bargaining unit have ratified a settlement reached with the Lakehead District School Board earlier this week. The four year contract will be in place until August 31, 2012.

"Our community has been seriously affected by the economic downturn and job losses, especially in the resource and forestry sectors, and this means those who live and work here are hurting," said Sue Smith, President of the District 6A EA bargaining unit. "We are pleased the Lakehead District School Board realized that reaching this agreement meant they would be able to access the provincial funds made available to maintain staffing and other support services. This was critical to making sure our students, especially those with special needs, would continue getting help to be successful even during these difficult times."

"For our members, improving benefits and getting recognition for Family Day as a paid holiday were important gains," continued Smith. "We were also able to use this round of bargaining as an opportunity to raise the concerns our members have about appropriate student supervision as well as health and safety and workplace violence issues."

Sandra Sahli, provincial Executive Officer of OSSTF/FEESO and Chair of the District 6A negotiating team commented, "By ratifying this settlement, our members have shown support for their bargaining team and the challenges they faced at the table. Language to improve job security and the agreement to bring back experienced EAs now on recall will help ensure student needs continue to be met. We are also glad that reaching this settlement means students and their families, as well as our members, do not have to spend the holiday break worrying about what the future holds."

OSSTF/FEESO, founded in 1919, has 60,000 members across Ontario. They include public high school teachers, occasional teachers, educational assistants, continuing education teachers and instructors, psychologists, secretaries, speech-language pathologists, social workers, plant support personnel, attendance counsellors, and many others in education.
