Utah Valley University (UVU) is one of the largest institutions of higher learning in Utah with nearly 33,000 students. The university selected Bradford Networks to provide comprehensive wireless network access control across the campus while significantly reducing IT administration and the number of calls to the support help desk.
"Over the past couple of years we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of mobile devices connecting to our wireless network, hand in hand with a significant increase in the number of calls to our help desk because of associated network access and security problems. We therefore sought a flexible, fully automated solution that would address these key BYOD challenges," said Duke W Heaton, network engineer at Utah Valley University. "Bradford Networks' Network Sentry jumped to the top of our list. It has all the capabilities we were looking for, and most importantly, it's non-intrusive and makes the overall onboarding process so much easier, faster and a more pleasant experience. We hope to expand Network Sentry to our wired networks in the near future."
The number of mobile devices, such as laptops, iPads, smartphones and gaming devices that students are bringing on to campus has exploded in recent years. Additionally, many education institutions -- including K-12 and higher-education -- are implementing new initiatives for students to use personal mobile devices for collaborative learning experiences both inside and beyond the classroom walls.
These BYOD strategies present significant challenges for IT departments who are required to effectively manage and secure these extremely diverse network environments. This includes seamlessly managing the multitude of devices accessing the network concurrently, correctly provisioning network access based on user profiles, and protecting the campus network from the security risks.
Network Sentry integrates with IT infrastructure and correlates network, security, endpoint device, and user information to provide total visibility and control over every user and device accessing the network. Key benefits for educational institutions include:
- Safely allows student-owned devices onto the campus network;
- Delivers 100 percent visibility into all mobile devices connecting to the network;
- Enables an automated, self-service registration process for thousands of student-owned devices;
- Automatically provisions the appropriate level of network access for faculty, students, and guests;
- Confirms devices are fully protected before they gain access to the network.
"Educational institutions have been dealing with BYOD for years, however the number of mobile devices that students now bring onto campus and the creative ways in which these institutions are using these devices has exacerbated the existing security, management and onboarding challenges," said Tom Murphy, chief marketing officer, Bradford Networks. "We are proud that Network Sentry is the network access control solution of choice for educational institutions around the globe and that it is enabling them to address these challenges and achieve complete visibility, security and control across their campus networks."
