EEDC Supports Downtown Sports and Entertainment Complex

EEDC applauds City Council and shows full support for development of downtown entertainment complex

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - May 25, 2011) -Edmonton Economic Development Corporation (EEDC) and its board of directors show full support of City Council's recent decision to proceed with the development of a downtown sports and entertainment complex. Development of the downtown complex — together with related hotel, office, and commercial development — will stimulate additional economic growth and create a vibrant urban core.

"Our board believes that Edmonton has more economic potential and a brighter economic future than virtually any community of comparable size; however, that future is not without challenges," says Henry Yip, chairman of the board of directors of EEDC. "To be successful, Edmonton needs to be able to attract and retain the best and the brightest, and offer a quality of life that matches or exceeds that available in other communities."

A strong and vibrant downtown core is central to EEDC's support for the planned sports and entertainment complex. The project will play a critical role in attracting additional employment, increase residential development to the downtown core, and will stimulate investments in more restaurants, retail spaces, commercial spaces, and cultural venues.

Yip says, "While we recognize that a community's quality of life is made up of a number of different elements, there is no question that having a strong and vibrant downtown is critical to being recognized as a community with a world-class quality of life."

"We commend City Council for its bold decision to proceed with this project," says Yip. "We believe the planned sports and entertainment complex will be a very effective catalyst in stimulating and accelerate the growth of a strong and vibrant downtown."

EEDC announced its support of the original vision of a downtown entertainment and arena district in December 2009.
