EffectiveUI Enhances Digital Experience With Updated Version of "The Complete National Geographic"

New Version Built With Adobe AIR 2.0 Adds Content, Improves Overall User Experience

DENVER, CO--(Marketwire - October 5, 2010) -  EffectiveUI today announced the release of an updated version of "The Complete National Geographic." The award-winning application captures 121 years of the iconic magazine's articles, maps, award-winning photos and advertisements on six DVD-ROMs or hard drive, and includes an additional year's worth of content and new usability updates and enhancements.

Bringing Together the Best of Two Worlds: Print and Digital
"The Complete National Geographic" provides users a highly intuitive and engaging way to explore the treasury of original reporting and stunning photography from one of the world's most iconic and best-loved magazines. Every printed page has been digitally scanned, allowing users to leaf through electronic pages, search, zoom, scroll and print at a high-resolution that captures the clarity and quality of the original publications.

The product contains more than 1,400 issues of National Geographic magazine, more than 8,000 articles and nearly 200,000 photographs and images.

"It's important that we offer our readers the best possible user experience in both the print and digital worlds," said Paul Levine, EVP, Interactive Platforms Group, National Geographic Global Media. "Through 'The Complete National Geographic,' EffectiveUI has brought the best of both worlds together, providing an awesome experience that enhances the presentation and exploration of the content our print readers already know and love. With this latest version we are building on the success of the previous version, while further improving the ease of use and performance."

"'The Complete National Geographic' is a perfect example of how digital media can bring print archives to an entirely new level of interactivity and depth of discovery for users," said Rebecca Flavin, CEO, EffectiveUI. "We were honored to work once again with National Geographic and help deliver even more functionality and enhancements to this unparalleled application of world-renowned content."

The Right Technology for an Engaging User Experience
Developed using the Adobe Flash Platform, the newly updated version of "The Complete National Geographic" continues to leverage the technology and design success of the previous version, but also aims to enhance the overall experience. By upgrading to the new AIR 2.0 runtime, the application is much more responsive and has an improved printing experience. AIR allows the application to operate as a successful online-desktop hybrid, and helps users to quickly view and sort data on their desktops, accessing articles and images for a faster, more seamless viewing experience.

The updated version includes all the features in the original release, as well as usability upgrades, including:

  • Added support for in-application purchases of content updates
  • Improved fidelity of search results
  • An enhanced Geobrowse search experience, powered by Flash Player 10 and Bing Maps, which provides users with Internet access with a highly engaging and visually stunning way to locate articles and maps on a 3-D globe. Geobrowse allows users to click on nearly 5,000 geo-coded locations.
