Eganville Man Pleads Guilty to Permitting Distress to Animals Under the Ontario SPCA Act

EGANVILLE, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - July 16, 2013) - On June 28, 2013, Gerry South, formerly of Eganville, Ontario, plead guilty to permitting distress to animals.

On November 7 2011, an Ontario SPCA Investigator attended Mr. South's residence near Eganville, in response to a complaint about the welfare of two donkeys on the property.

At that time, it was observed that a number of animals on the property were in distress, and orders were issued by the Ontario SPCA for their care.

On December 1, 2011, the Ontario SPCA arrived at the property with a warrant and a veterinarian, as a result of non-compliance of orders and a veterinarian's recommendation to remove the animals. All 50 animals were removed from Mr. South's property.

These animals were under the care of the Ontario SPCA until they were in sufficient health to be adopted into new homes.

Mr. South is prohibited from owning, living with, or having care of animals for a period of 15 years.

"All animals require proper care, living conditions, fresh food and water," says Senior Inspector Larry Wilkinson, "and it's the responsibility of the owner, guardian, or caregiver to provide that for them."

The Ontario SPCA reminds pet owners that if you have concerns for the welfare of your animal there are other alternatives than allowing an animal to go without adequate care.
