Egenera Adds Converged Infrastucture Support for Fujitsu x86 Servers

Egenera's Heterogeneous Server Management Enables Customers to Choose Hardware When Deploying Unified Computing Solutions

MARLBOROUGH, MA--(Marketwire - October 7, 2010) -   Egenera today announced it has added PAN Manager® Software support for the Fujitsu PRIMERGY® BX900 Blade Server, continuing its thrust to deliver converged infrastructure solutions compatible with multiple vendors' server and Virtual Machine (VM) technologies. Already compatible with Dell hardware and Egenera's own BladeFrame® offering, Fujitsu's support is further evidence of Egenera's commitment to delivering open, unified computing solutions that give customers the ability to select the virtualization, hardware and storage of their choice, thus avoiding vendor lock-in.

Converged Infrastructure -- also referred to as unified computing -- simplifies data center infrastructure management by pooling server, I/O, networking and storage resources, and then reallocating them automatically. IDC predicts there will be more than 100 million virtual and physical servers installed by 2013, which will increase the pressures on IT staff as they work to manage multiple applications and servers across heterogeneous environments.

Egenera simplifies the deployment and management of converged infrastructure by offering an open solution. The company's PAN Manager software runs on the Fujitsu PRIMERGY® BX900 blade server, the The Dell PowerEdge™ M1000e Modular Blade Enclosure, and Egenera's own BladeFrame. Further, PAN Manager uses standard Ethernet, which is inexpensive and pervasive. Enterprises also can choose their storage provider. Consequently, Egenera's solution speeds adoption, enabling customers to build mission-critical computing blocks, with far fewer point-software components than other alternatives.

"Egenera's strategy is to offer the simplicity and value of unified computing on all major server platforms," said Egenera President and CEO Pete Manca. "PAN Manager eliminates the need for costly I/O and networking components, as well as multiple point-product management software -- all while integrating management, scaling, high availability and disaster recovery. Unlike others, Egenera will do so with the compute and storage platforms based upon the customer's choice -- not mandated by one vendor."

"Converged infrastructure and unified computing are an emerging wave of technology to simplify data center management," said Jed Scaramella, Research Manager, Servers at IDC. "While customers want the operational simplicity and cost benefits of converged infrastructure, there are still questions about being bound to a single-vendor solution. Egenera's Ethernet-based multiplatform approach delivers an open solution that provides customers both simplicity and flexibility."
