Egg Farmers of Canada Acclaims Peter Clarke as New Chair

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 25, 2011) - Egg Farmers of Canada (EFC) is pleased to announce Peter Clarke of Nova Scotia as its new Chair following his election by acclamation at the 38th Annual General Meeting on March 23, 2011. Mr. Clarke assumes leadership of EFC following the departure this month of long-time Chair Laurent Souligny. Most recently, Mr. Clarke served on the Executive Committee as 1st Vice Chair while also chairing EFC's Research Committee. In addition to Mr. Clarke's acclamation as Chair, the Board of Directors elected Directors Fred Krahn from British Columbia as 1st Vice Chair, George MacLeod of New Brunswick as 2nd Vice Chair and Serge Lefebvre of Quebec to the Executive Committee.

"I welcome the opportunity to lead Egg Farmers of Canada and am truly honoured by the support I've received from my Board colleagues," said Mr. Clarke. "Laurent set a very high bar for his quality of leadership and it is my intention to build on his legacy. Laurent thought of the Board and everyone in the industry as his family and I want to carry on in that spirit of friendship and cooperation," he added.

As EFC's new Chair, Mr. Clarke stressed the importance of maintaining continued strong support for supply management from all federal political parties, especially during federal election campaigns. As well, he emphasized the need to remain active on the international front with EFC's supply management partners as well as before bodies that establish guidelines considered by governments when they develop agricultural programs and regulations. Furthermore, Mr. Clarke put his full support behind continuing efforts to develop marketing programs that sustain egg consumption by showing consumers that eggs are an excellent source of protein.

Retiring Chair Laurent Souligny said, "I've been honoured to serve as Chair for 11 years and I feel I'm leaving the Canadian egg industry in better shape than I found it. I have full confidence in Peter's abilities to lead the egg industry forward to face the challenges of tomorrow."

Mr. Clarke has represented Nova Scotia on the EFC Board of Directors since 1995. He has also participated on numerous EFC committees, including the Audit Committee, the Budget Committee, the Research Committee and the Production Management Committee, many of which he chaired. In addition, he has served on the Nova Scotia Egg Producers Board of Directors since 1987. Mr. Clarke is a well-respected member of the agriculture community in Nova Scotia, where he operates an egg farm with his family in the Annapolis Valley. He is also a recipient of the Order of Nova Scotia.

Egg Farmers of Canada is a not-for-profit national organization founded in 1972 that represents 1,032 regulated egg farmers in all ten provinces and the Northwest Territories. EFC forecasts demand for eggs, promotes eggs and develops national standards for egg farming. EFC's goal is to provide Canadians with a secure supply of high-quality Canadian-produced eggs.
