Elan Challenges 32-Bit PC Card Wireless Modem Preconceptions

FAREHAM, UK -- (MARKET WIRE) -- August 22, 2005 -- Elan Digital Systems is challenging card designers' preconceptions regarding 32-bit CardBus interfaces for Wireless Modem PC Cards. The UK company has come up with a revolutionary 16-bit chip design for PCMCIA & CF Wireless Modem cards exceeding the data-speeds and overcoming the compromises usually associated with 32-bit interfaces.

Up till now designers believed that in order to implement an internal high speed serial interface they were forced to consider 32-bit CardBus interface chips to achieve data transfer speed above 3-400 Kbits/sec. However, it has now been proved possible to achieve 20-Mbits/sec with Elan's 16-bit PC Card interface chip.

The VMB5000 chip, which comes in a single 64 QFN package, overcomes many of the problems associated with 32-bit CardBus interface chips. The 32-bit devices have typically been designed for use in very tightly controlled motherboard applications and do not respond well when used in a PCMCIA environment, especially when used across a wide variety of different PC platforms. Among other installation and usage issues, total system crash is frequently the 'experience' of the end user. Add to this the fact that power consumption is high, typical pin count is over 120 and there is no chance of use in PDA or USB adapter applications, the conclusion is that 32-bit is not the most product-enhancing choice of interface.

Elan's VMB5000 is a dual channel device with a choice of USB or UART on each channel. Typical power consumption in active mode is less than 14mA and PDA compatibility (Compact Flash card) is assured, plus the PCMCIA card can be used in Elan's U111 series USB to PCMCIA adapter, expanding the card's market to include desktop PCs.

"We are delighted with the performance and versatility of the VMB5000," Julian Barnard, Managing Director of Elan says, "and the chip achieves superior product performance at a stroke proving that compromise is no longer necessary with Elan's VMB5000."
