Elderly Woman Fights Loneliness Through Blogging

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - August 22, 2007) - Julie Flores, 75, has begun a weekly blog in hopes of encouraging other lonely seniors to join in and share their own personal experience living life alone.

Ever since losing her husband in 1991, Flores went through a whirlwind of depression, alcoholism and bouts of suicide as she found herself living alone with no friends or family.

After beating breast cancer at the age of 72, Flores began to keep a diary and wrote in it daily about her experience as a widow, her loneliness, her breast cancer and her own self-soothing medication -- alcohol.

Today, Flores, through a weekly blog, hopes to build a community of blogging seniors that find themselves in similar situations.

"I remember how lonely I felt, I didn't want to live after my husband died," says Flores. "I started expressing my feelings on paper and in some ways made life a bit easier. I hope others can find comfort in writing and maybe share their stories with seniors in similar situations."

Flores, who resembles the crabby, old lady from Hallmark's greeting cards, credits a friend for helping her through her depression.

"Aside from encouraging me to start a journal and write daily, he took me under his umbrella and took me along everywhere he went -- as if I was part of his family," says Flores. "That inspired me to write more and more."
