Elections Canada: Chief Electoral Officer of Canada Receives Notice of Vacancy in House of Commons for Vercheres-Les Patriotes

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 16, 2005) - The Chief Electoral Officer of Canada, Jean-Pierre Kingsley, received on November 14, 2005, the official warrant from the Speaker of the House of Commons indicating that the seat for Vercheres-Les Patriotes (Quebec) is vacant. In accordance with subsection 31(1) of the Parliament of Canada Act, a by-election must be called between the 11th day and the 180th day after the receipt of the warrant by the Chief Electoral Officer.

Pursuant to subsection 57(3) of the Canada Elections Act, the by-election must be held on a Monday. If, in the week in which the by-election is to be held, the Monday is a holiday, the by-election shall be held on the Tuesday of that week. Since the date of the by-election must be at least 36 days after the issue of the writ, the earliest that the by-election in Vercheres-Les Patriotes can be held is on Tuesday, January 3, 2006.
