Elections Canada Releases Election Expenses Limits for Registered Political Parties

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 30, 2007) - The Chief Electoral Officer of Canada, Marc Mayrand, today released the election expenses limits for registered political parties in the by-elections of Monday, September 17, 2007, in the electoral districts of Outremont (Quebec), Roberval-Lac-Saint-Jean (Quebec) and Saint-Hyacinthe-Bagot (Quebec). The limits are based on the number of names on the preliminary lists of electors for those electoral districts in which the party has a confirmed candidate.

According to subsection 422(1) of the Canada Elections Act, the maximum amount allowed for election expenses of a registered political party for an election is the product of $0.70 multiplied by the number of names on the preliminary lists of electors or by the number of names on the revised lists of electors, whichever is greater, for electoral districts for which a registered political party has a confirmed candidate. This amount is then adjusted for inflation.

The election expenses limits for the registered political parties for the by-elections are as follows:
