Electrical Faults Replace Smoking as Number One Cause of Workplace Fires

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Nov. 15, 2010) - Swinton Commercial is urging businesses to ensure they adhere to new legislation protecting them from electrical fires, as faulty electrics become the most common cause for fire-related claims, at businesses across the UK.

The news comes as a result of legislation implemented in 2007, banning smoking in offices across the country. With employees forced to go outside to light up, a decrease in claims for material losses due to discarded cigarettes subsequently followed.

The news is backed by recent claims statistics that show faulty electrics to be the most common cause to claim, as recently implemented no smoking legislation has cut claims caused by cigarettes and negligent businesses cut corners, resulting in faulty electrics to overtake cigarette induced fires and subsequently cause claims for material losses due to faulty electrics to rise.

Swinton Commercial, a leading provider of business insurance, is warning business to adhere to new legislation which requires any UK business premise to have an Electrical Inspection Certification. This certification helps to protect businesses from faulty electrics catching fire and requires an inspection from an electrician to determine any possible hazards, and ultimately help reduce the chance of fire.

Chris Pearson, sales manager at Swinton Commercial, said: "Faulty electrics are a serious cause for concern and its vital businesses recognise the need to get an electrical inspection certificate to ensure their business is protected from electrical fires and reduce the chance of a claim".
