About the Golf Shot Around the World Mission

The Golf Shot Around the World, the longest drive in history, commemorated the 35th anniversary of the first golf short in space, by Astronaut Alan J. Shepard. On the eve of Thanksgiving just over one year ago, November 22, 2006, Russian Cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin, using a specially designed gold-plated Element 21 Scandium Eagle One golf club, successfully hit a gold-plated golf ball into earth orbit from the International Space Station (ISS), 220 miles above the earth as an estimated 300 million plus people watched. Still in orbit and travelling at 6 miles per second, the ball has logged over 195 million miles and is expected to travel over a billion miles. The flight of the ball can be tracked at The Element 21 website is The Shot also served to highlight the many benefits of using Scandium Alloys in golf clubs to achieve greater distance, accuracy and consistency than offered by any other materials currently in use. The Scandium Alloy was originally developed by scientists for advanced aeronautics and space applications which includes the International Space Station.

About The Element 21 Scandium Shaft Technology

Element 21's Scandium Alloy shafts are manufactured using a proprietary 25-step production process to create a seamless, extruded shaft. Variable wall thickness and the alloy's high tensile strength results in a vibration dampening system called ShockBlok™ with 270% better shock attenuation than steel shafts that protects golfers' bodies, bones and joints. Each Element 21 shaft is made from a single piece of Scandium Alloy resulting in unmatched consistency from club to club as well as unprecedented accuracy and distance and an industry-leading torque of as low as 1.4 degrees.
