Elementary teachers support literacy camps

Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, Education Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 18, 2005) -
The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) is making a substantial donation to support the Lieutenant Governor's literacy camps.
"It is important to give aboriginal children this opportunity," said ETFO President Emily Noble. "This donation will help expand this very worthwhile venture."

Speaking at the ETFO annual meeting the Honourable James K. Bartleman emphasized the importance of improving the literacy skills of Aboriginal children in Ontario's north.

This past summer Mr. Bartleman, working with a number of community partners organized five literacy camps in the Treaty 5 and Treaty 9 areas of Ontario.

The camps follow on his earlier initiatives, which resulted in the sending of 850,000 books to northern communities, and the twinning of 100 native schools with non-native schools.

Mr. Bartleman told the annual meeting delegates that he has come to believe strongly in the importance of early intervention to enhance children's academic success. He challenged ETFO members to become actively involved in literacy camps by volunteering to work in the literacy camps and by promoting the twinning of schools.

ETFO delegates voted to contribute $25,000 to support the literacy camps.
