ELGIN COUNTY, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Dec. 16, 2013) - On December 2, 2013, Adam White of Elgin County, Ontario, pleaded guilty to two counts of animal cruelty under the Ontario SPCA Act.
The charges included:
- Permitting an animal to be in distress contrary to section 11.2(2);
- Failure to comply with the prescribed standards of care for such animals contrary to section 11.1(1) to wit did fail to provide animals with the care necessary for the general welfare as required by Ontario Regulation 60/09 S.2(3).
On August 9, 2012, the Ontario SPCA received concerns about the conditions of animals located at a residence in Rodney, Elgin County. Numerous attempts to contact the owners went unanswered. When the owners could not be reached, the Ontario SPCA executed a search warrant on the property.
Officers found 25 cats, seven dogs, three birds and a Fennec fox in distress, living in unsanitary conditions requiring veterinary care; there was also a lack of food and water, as well as poor ventilation. Also found on the property were two horses and eight rabbits outside the residence in unsanitary conditions with a lack of food and water.
A veterinarian attended the residence and, after assessing the animals, signed a certificate of removal. Ontario SPCA Officers removed the animals from the property and Mr. White was charged under the Ontario SPCA Act.
Mr. White was sentenced and received a $500 fine for each count and is prohibited from owning an animal for five years.
