Elk Valley Coal Mines Win Reclamation Awards

CALGARY--(CCNMatthews - June 30) - Elk Valley Coal Partnership today announced that its Fording River and Elkview mining operations located in southeastern British Columbia, were award recipients at the 30th Annual British Columbia Mine Reclamation Symposium held in Smithers, British Columbia on June 21st.

Fording River operations was awarded the 2005 British Columbia Jake McDonald Mine Reclamation Award for outstanding reclamation achievements. This marks the third time in its operating history that Fording River mine has received this award. The mine was previously recognized in 1979 and 1992.

"We are very proud of this momentous achievement," said John Pumphrey, environmental officer at Fording River. "Reclamation has been an integral part of the mining process at Fording River since mining began in the 1970s. Significant time and resources have been invested into reclamation programs and in keeping with our practice for environmental sustainability, reclamation will continue to play an important role in the future."

Fording River operations is Canada's largest producer of metallurgical coal. Since implementing its reclamation research in 1969, Fording River has been a leader in mine reclamation, contributing significantly to the current state of reclamation knowledge in the Province.

The 2005 Citation for outstanding achievement for reclamation at a Coal Mine was awarded to the Elkview operations. Dave Ryder, senior environmental coordinator at Elkview operations accepted the award.

"This award is a credit to everyone at the mine," said Dave. "Employees at Elkview have demonstrated their long-term commitment to successful reclamation at the mine. In fact, Elkview has been a leader in the development of reclamation solutions for more than 30 years. In addition to the reclamation of newer disturbance, Elkview has done an excellent job of reclaiming historical mining disturbances."

Recent wildlife surveys indicate the largest recorded populations of elk and mule deer on the Elkview property in more than 20 years.

"We are very proud of the awards these two mines have received," said Jim Popowich, President of Elk Valley Coal and Fording Canadian Coal Trust. "We believe these awards are a reflection of Elk Valley Coal's ongoing commitment to being a responsible member of the communities in which we operate."
