Elsevier Announces Updated Edition of Laboratory Animal Medicine and New App for Medicating Animals

Collaboration With American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine Increases Effectiveness of Laboratory Animal Veterinarians and Researchers

WALTHAM, MA--(Marketwired - November 16, 2015) - Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, today announced the publication of the third edition of the renowned "Blue Book" series volume, Laboratory Animal Medicine. Edited by James Fox, Lynn Anderson, Glen Otto, Kathleen Pritchett-Corning and Mark Whary, the new book from the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) offers gold-standard guidance on the biology, health and care of laboratory animals.

Elsevier also introduced the ACLAM e-Formulary app, an innovative new application -- edited and compiled by Garry Linton, Sean Maguire and Karen Rogers -- providing laboratory animal scientists with on-hand calculations for doses and a comprehensive source of information on medicines. Laboratory Animal Medicine, the ACLAM e-Formulary and four additional new laboratory animal books from Elsevier were recently showcased at the 66th National Meeting of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) in Phoenix, Arizona. The app will be available for purchase on Android and iPhone devices later in 2015.

The fully-revised new edition of Laboratory Animal Medicine is organized by species, with new inclusions of chinchillas and birds, as well as guidance on program and employee management. Written and edited by known experts, it offers the most up to date and thorough coverage of the field for veterinary and medical students and researchers who use animals in biological and biomedical research.

Developed in collaboration with the ACLAM, the ACLAM e-Formulary app simply and quickly delivers information on appropriate drugs, delivery methods, concentrations and quantities relative to the weight of a given animal. The app uses a meticulously compiled database of medication and species for these calculations, with all the relevant information available to the user. Accessible on handheld devices (Android and iPhone), the ACLAM e-Formulary app provides the calculated doses required as efficiently as possible to streamline the process of medicating animals in the laboratory setting.

The five new laboratory animal books are:

Elsevier uses proprietary tools to identify knowledge gaps in fields such as laboratory animal science. Editorial teams then strategically fill those gaps with content written by key influencers in the field, giving students, faculty and researchers the content they need to answer challenging questions and improve outcomes. These new books and application are key examples of how Elsevier is enabling science to drive innovation.

The books are available on both the Elsevier Store and ScienceDirect, Elsevier's full-text scientific database offering journal articles and book chapters from over 2,500 peer-reviewed journals and more than 33,000 book titles.
