Elsevier Publishes Three New Encyclopedias on Mental Health, Pharmacology and Forensic Medicine

New Reference Works Fill Content Gaps to Answer Challenging Questions and Improve Outcomes

CAMBRIDGE, MA--(Marketwired - November 18, 2015) - Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, today announced the publication of three new encyclopedias -- the Encyclopedia of Mental Health, Meyler's Side Effects of Drugs, and the Encyclopedia of Forensic and Legal Medicine.

The second edition of the Encyclopedia of Mental Health, edited by Dr. Howard Friedman, provides up-to-date descriptions of the neurological, social, genetic, and psychological factors that affect the individual and society. It contains more than 240 articles written by domain experts in the field and is written in an accessible style using terms that an educated layperson can understand. The encyclopedia will be of interest to public as well as research libraries with coverage of many important topics, including marital health, divorce, couples therapy, fathers, child custody, day care and day care providers, extended families, and family therapy. It also provides essential material on assessment, theories of personality, specific disorders, therapies, forensic issues, ethics, and cross-cultural and sociological aspects. Dr. Friedman is Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Riverside.

The 16th edition of Meyler's Side Effects of Drugs: The International Encyclopedia of Adverse Drug Reactions and Interactions, edited by Dr. Jeffrey Aronson, provides expanded coverage of each drug, with more than 1,500 drug articles and information on adverse reactions and interactions. It offers clearer, systematic organization of information for easier reading, including case histories to provide perspective on each listing and an extensive bibliography with more than 40,000 references. It is an appropriate reference work for any academic or medical library, pharmacologist, regulatory organization, hospital dispensary or pharmaceutical company. Dr. Aronson is a consultant clinical pharmacologist and physician in the Department of Primary Health Care in the University of Oxford and a consultant physician in the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals Trust.

The Encyclopedia of Forensic and Legal Medicine, edited by Drs. Roger Byard and Jason Payne-James and now in its second edition, is a four-volume encyclopedia compiled by an international team of forensic specialists who explore the relationship between law, medicine, and science in the study of forensics. This reference work includes more than 300 chapters with articles covering autopsies, ballistics, fingerprinting, hair and fiber analysis, and the sophisticated procedures associated with terrorism investigations, forensic chemistry, DNA and immunoassays. It is suitable for any practitioner in a forensic, medical, healthcare, legal, judicial or investigative field looking for easily accessible and authoritative overviews on a wide range of topics. Dr. Byard holds the George Richard Marks Chair of Pathology at the University of Adelaide and is Senior Specialist Forensic Pathologist at Forensic Science SA in Adelaide, Australia. Dr. Payne-James is an independent specialist in forensic and legal medicine and has been a Forensic Medical Examiner with the Metropolitan Police Service in London, UK, for nearly 25 years.

Elsevier uses proprietary tools to identify knowledge gaps in fields such as psychology, pharmacology and forensic medicine. Editorial teams then strategically fill those gaps with content written by key influencers in the field, giving students, faculty, researchers and practitioners the content they need to answer challenging questions and improve outcomes. These new reference works are examples of how Elsevier is enabling science to drive innovation.

The encyclopedias are available on both the Elsevier Store and ScienceDirect, Elsevier's full-text scientific database offering journal articles and book chapters from over 2,500 peer-reviewed journals and more than 33,000 book titles.
