ELX Announces Strong First Quarter; Sets Multiple Monthly and Quarterly Volume and Market Share Records

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - April 4, 2011) - ELX Futures, L.P. (ELX), a leading electronic futures exchange, announced today that multiple volume and market share records were set in the month of March and in the first quarter of 2011 in its combined U.S. Treasury and Eurodollar futures contracts. ELX traded a record 6.1M total contracts in the first quarter, up 29% from the previous quarter.

Monthly & Quarterly Highlights:

  • ELX set a new quarterly record, with 6.1M total contracts traded in the first quarter, up 29% from the prior quarter.

  • ELX set a total quarterly volume record for the combined U.S. Treasury futures at 4.8M, up 51% from the prior quarter; ELX also set a new monthly volume record with 1.9M contracts traded in March, up 37% from the previous month.

  • ELX set new quarterly market share records in the 2 and 10-Year Notes and 30-Year Bond as well as a new market share record for the combined U.S. Treasury futures products at 2.7%, up .61% from the prior quarter.

  • The 30-Year Bond hit a new single-day market share record at 7.3% on March 8, 2011.

  • The 2, 5 and 10-Year Notes and the 30-Year Bond all established individual quarterly volume records and the 2 and 5-Year Notes also set new monthly records.

  • ADV for total U.S. Treasury futures established new monthly and quarterly records, passing 82k contracts in the month of March, up 13% from February and 77K contracts in the first quarter, a gain of 55% from the previous quarter.

  • The 2 and 5-Year Notes set new ADV records in March. The 2, 5 and 10-Year Notes and 30-Year Bond also established new quarterly ADV records.

  • Average daily Open Interest (OI) surged 55% in the first quarter of 2011 from the prior quarter in U.S. Treasuries.

  • Eurodollar futures had their best performing month and quarter for volume with over 480K contracts in March and over 1.3M contracts in the first quarter of 2011, a gain of 24% from the prior quarter.

  • ELX also set quarterly ADV and market share records in Eurodollar futures as well as monthly and quarterly average daily OI records. Eurodollar OI was over 312K in March and over 272K in the first quarter, up 89% from the prior quarter.

  • ELX announced plans to trade European interest-rate products from NYSE Liffe and Eurex, challenging the existing monopoly structure with enhanced technology, competitive pricing and market structure innovation. In these products, ELX will deploy maker-taker pricing models to enhance liquidity.

  • ELX also extended quarterly months for its Eurodollar futures contracts to 5 years from 2 years in March.
