Emerging Markets Communications Launches EMC Global Cell -- A Smart Phone Application Enabling Coverage in Remote Locations Worldwide

On-Board Crew Members and On-The-Ground Field Technicians Connect Using Their Personal Cell Phone and a Wi-Fi Network

HOUSTON, TX--(Marketwired - November 06, 2014) - Emerging Markets Communications announced today EMC Global Cell, a smart phone application enabling global coverage for employees, in remote locations, using their personal cell phones. The application will be available on the iTunes and Android marketplace, and uses a nearby Wi-Fi connection to make and receive phone calls, performing best on EMC's Global Satellite Network. EMC Global Cell is the latest addition to the company's value-added services portfolio and will be ready for purchase in early December 2014.

EMC Global Cell service scales across multiple industries and is ideal for oil and gas companies with crew members, in isolated areas, both onshore and offshore. The application and service is offered in flexible models, both commercial and technical, designed to optimize the cost and performance for both the end-user and employer.

"We are continuously seeking ways to add value to our customers, through enhanced connectivity solutions that drive efficiency and increased productivity in remote locations," said Jesus Barber, Sr. Vice President, Maritime and Energy Emerging Markets Communications. "Our customers are demanding alternative communications for crew members that are economical and do not compromise the performance of the Operations network," said Barber. "EMC Global Cell application and service allows crew members to make private calls on their own phone, using a dedicated network, with optimized payment options."

Direct Client Model

In the oil and gas industry, rig and vessel owners, operators and services providers procure connectivity services directly from EMC using its Global Ku-Band Network, for a fixed, monthly rate. EMC's Global Cell service is packaged as part of the existing crew welfare offering with the ability for end-users to use their own phones.

EMC will design a network for the rig or vessel, with a dedicated pool of bandwidth for crew communications. The quality of service (QoS) will be configured and prioritized to deliver packets to achieve the highest performance of each network.

Crew members download the application, connect to EMC's Wi-Fi on-board, using a secure log-in and password. Minutes and usage are tracked against each crew member's daily allowance for crew welfare, using credits.

This in-direct model enables rig/vessel owners and operators to provide an alternative calling service for crew members that is more private, with the ability to control cost and maximize performance of its core operations network.

EMC Global Cell Benefits for Rig and Vessel Owners and Operators

  • Dedicated Network for Crew Welfare: EMC will separate the crew welfare and operations networks to maximize the performance of each.
  • Controlled Cost: Flexible commercial options allow more control of the crew welfare costs.
  • Easy to Deploy: EMC will deploy this using QR Codes.
  • No Capex Investment: There are no additional capital investments needed to provide this service.
  • Differentiator for Employee Retention and Morale: Unique service that helps retain employees and increases morale.

Direct End-User Model

EMC also offers a commercial model for EMC Global Cell which allows end-users to pay EMC directly for the service, using PayPal. Crew members download the application, using a secure log-in and password and purchase credits using a personal form of payment. A Wi-Fi connection is required but not limited to EMC's Global Satellite Coverage, however EMC guarantees a better performance on its network.
