EMLab Analysts Receive PAACB Certification

SAN BRUNO, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- March 16, 2005 -- Environmental Microbiology Laboratory, Inc. (EMLab) is pleased to announce the certification of sixteen of its analysts as Spore Analyst Level 1 in the first round of the Pan American Aerobiology Certification Board (PAACB) testing.

The PAACB, Inc. is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote accuracy in the identification and quantification of airborne fungal spores and pollen grains by conferring certification to analysts who demonstrate a specific level of knowledge and skill. The certification is awarded to individual analysts, not laboratories, ensuring the quality of the analysis where accurate identification is critical.

In order to earn recognition by the PAACB, candidates must first pass a written qualifying examination that tests knowledge of aerobiology. Successful candidates must then pass a certification exam that tests spore-trap reading skills. Certified Spore Analysts Level 1 must demonstrate knowledge of topics including mycology, bioaerosols, air sampling methods and investigations, and spore counting protocols. They must also be able to correctly identify spores and separate spores from artifacts.

"The Spore Analyst Certification is important because it is the first in the industry to certify analysts who demonstrate a specific level of knowledge of aerobiology and competency in microscopic identification. This certification is an important complement to AIHA accreditation, which certifies laboratory QA/QC processes. PAACB certification should provide standardization in the industry and establish a baseline for laboratories which provide spore count analyses. EMLab is proud to be among the first in the industry to seek this certification for our analysts," said Dr. Harriet Burge, Director of Aerobiology and Chair of EMLab's Scientific Advisory Board.

"EMLab's mission is to provide the best quality and service in the IAQ industry. I am pleased to be part of the lab with the largest number of analysts who meet this rigorous standard of excellence," commented Dr. John Shane, member of EMLab's Scientific Advisory Board and Midwest Regional Manager.

EMLab is recognized as one of the leading commercial indoor air quality (IAQ) laboratories in North America, specializing in the analysis of air and surface samples for fungi and bacteria. With over 30 years' experience, EMLab helped pioneer today's IAQ industry. Further information is available on the company's web site at or by calling 866-888-6653.
