Emmi Convenes Thought Leaders for Health Literacy Month Through October

Health Literacy Month Raises Awareness, Spotlights Perspectives on Care Transitions

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwired - October 01, 2015) - Nine out of 10 English-speaking U.S. adults would have difficulty with common health tasks, such as following directions on a prescription drug label, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. To help shine a spotlight this issue, Emmi, provider of superior patient engagement solutions for healthcare provider and payer organizations, is participating in Health Literacy Month during the month of October and devoting discussions on its blog, "Engaging the Patient," to conversations addressing health literacy.

Health literacy is the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions, according to the CDC. Emmi's blog series spotlights people from different communities to interact and share ideas about health literacy, including patients, clinicians, health literacy researchers, decision scientists, behavioral economists, journalists and family caregivers. This year, contributors to Emmi's blog series will examine the intersection of health literacy and transitions, such as moving from the hospital to home or from pediatric to adolescent care.

Contributors include:

  • Regina Holliday, an artist, patient rights advocate and founder of the Walking Gallery and the Medical Advocacy Project. Regina is part of the participatory medicine movement, a model of cooperative healthcare that seeks to achieve active involvement by patients, professionals, caregivers, and others across the continuum of care.
  • Michael Paasche-Orlow, MD, MPH, a Boston University associate professor and expert on health literacy interventions. Dr. Paasche-Orlow was a co-investigator on Project RED (Re-Engineered Discharge), a nationally recognized model for reengineering the hospital discharge process to improve care transitions.
  • Carol Levine, a former family caregiver and director of the United Hospital Fund's Families and Health Care Project, which focuses on developing partnerships between providers and family caregivers during transitions in healthcare settings. Carol works to alleviate the challenges facing family caregivers during these transitions.

"Studies show people have problems understanding and acting on health information, which is inherently complex," said Geri Lynn Baumblatt, executive director of patient engagement for Emmi and editor of the Health Literacy Month series. "Patients' literacy skills, languages, ages, cultural contexts and emotional responses all can affect how they absorb, respond to and act on health information. This series will help spur conversations and insights that are important to increasing health literacy to improve care transitions and other types of transitions that are often not addressed."
