Emmi Solutions Participates in National Healthcare Decisions Day to Raise Awareness About Advance Directives

Helping Providers Turn Difficult Conversations Into Clinical Opportunities

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwired - April 08, 2015) - In recognition of National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) on April 16th, a day devoted to encouraging the completion of advance directives, Emmi Solutions, the leader in outcomes-driven patient engagement, is raising awareness among healthcare providers and the public about the importance of proactively engaging in discussions about end of life care. The company will host a live webinar, publish an infographic with key statistics and set up a temporary "Advance Directives" center in its Chicago headquarters to help facilitate completion of their employees' own advance directives. The company will also be encouraging clients to promote the initiative internally to their own employees. In addition, the Emmi® Advance Directives program will be free for viewing for a limited time on the company's website.

The live webinar will feature Dr. Ira Byock, Chief Medical Officer for the Providence Institute for Human Caring and a leading palliative care physician and author and Dr. Sheri Kittelson, Medical Director for the UF Health Palliative Care Program. Attendees will receive expert insights on an updated clinical view of advance care planning, patient rationale during end of life discussions and communication strategies to address apprehension and a look at how University of Florida Health went from a low-performer in the advance care space to running an industry-leading palliative care program.

"There are serious communication challenges around advance care planning and they contribute to the emotional and financial burdens on patients, their families and their caretakers," said Emmi Solutions' Executive Director of Patient Engagement, Geri Lynn Baumblatt. "Empowering people to make decisions about their own care before reaching a point where they can no longer speak for themselves can shift that experience from one of stress and confusion to one where everyone involved including the family and care team is readily prepared to follow the person's wishes."

"In a study of ICU patients with terminal conditions, only 12 percent of patients with an advance directive had received input from their physician in its development while another study showed that between 65 and 76 percent of physicians whose patients had an advance directive were not aware that it existed," said Nathan Kottkamp, founder of NHDD. "These findings show that there is a huge communication gap between patients and their doctors around end of life care, NHDD's mission is to help close that gap while Emmi Solutions' program is a useful tool for doing so."

Emmi interactive programs and interactive voice calls enhance doctor-patient relationships by providing understandable and actionable information at times the patient wishes to receive it. Emmi programs utilize simple language, compelling visuals and empathetic narration to help people make sense of complex medical information. The web-based programs can be shared with family and friends, guiding individuals to have meaningful conversations about their health with all involved in the process.
