Seeking employment as a seasoned candidate that had the misfortune of being jobless for more than three years, Sandra Polcari is now regarded as "one of my best employees" by General Manager Hussein Ahmed of the Courtyard by Marriott-Waldorf, who hired her through the Workforce Place in Waldorf after agreeing to assist the agency in placing job seekers with suitable employment.
"It was a decision that I have not once regretted," exerts Ahmed. "I agreed to meet with Sandra even though she was unemployed for over three years and closer to retirement than the rest and the position is very fast-paced. I interviewed Sandra twice and after her second interview, I couldn't turn her away."
Polcari was in a bad place in her life when she interviewed for a position as laundry attendant at the hotel. She had lost her fiancé, her home and was on a downward spiral toward the worst point of her life. She had walked door to door for approximately three years looking for work.
"I was unaware of any of this when I hired her as our laundry attendant last April," said Ahmed, as he explained the daily routine Polcari maintains. "Imagine waking up at 5 a.m. every day to walk to catch two buses to get to work for your shift by 8 a.m., no matter what the weather is, and keeping a smile on your face throughout the day."
Always maintaining a positive attitude and demonstrating a strong devotion to work even during hard times, Polcari brightens the days of all the Courtyard employees, often treating them with baked goods.
"I could not have dreamed of a more devoted, upbeat and all-around wonderful addition to our team," beamed Ahmed as he reflected on his decisions to participate in the workforce placement program and ultimately hire Polcari. "Sandra always brings treats for her co-workers and is a team player. From ensuring every housekeeper starts with the same amount of linen to providing each associate and manager with a cookie, cupcake or donut she takes her job and her relationship with co-workers seriously."
Recently describing her position in lodging in Waldorf, MD as "the best job I ever had," Polcari hopes she will someday be able to retire from work as a Courtyard by Marriott employee.
"While I will support her and be happy for her, I am not looking forward to that day as I will lose one of my best employees, found in the most unlikely of places," said Ahmed. "We are so lucky to have her on our team."
